Vaasa → Umeå by ferry, then to Sundsvall
Ferry nominal departure is 8am. Check-in by 7am.
I was checked in at 6:26am. We departed on time.
We arrived around 10:23 for 2h23m elapsed time.
But keep in mind, all that is GMT+3 and then I go to Sweden which is GMT+2 so I get back an extra hour. This super early start and long rest on the ferry enables a long riding day.
Then I rode until 17:56 (5:56pm) to the basement apartment for 7h33m elasped ride time
on a google nominal time of 4h53m (4h10m over or +85%).
Stayed in Sundsvall Basement Apartment by M about 2km from city center.
Ate dinner in downtown Sundsvall at Pitcher's.

Gemini says,
What a fun find! What you spotted is a delightful intersection of wildlife management and cultural pride.
What You Are Seeing
The Object: The little building in the photograph is a miniature duck house (known as an andhus in Swedish) or a shelter for other wild waterfowl.
The Purpose: By placing these small houses on an isolated rock or a floating platform in the middle of a pond, it provides ducks and other birds with a safe, predator-proof place to rest and nest away from land-based threats like foxes.
Is This a "Swedish" Thing?
Yes and no. While duck houses and birdhouses are used globally, the specific aesthetic of the one you saw is distinctly Swedish.
The Design: It is built to mimic a traditional Swedish summer cottage (stuga).
The Color: The classic red facade with white trim is a quintessential symbol of Swedish heritage. The specific hue is known as Falun Red (Falu rödfärg).
The History: Starting in the 16th century, byproducts from copper mines in Dalarna county were transformed into this durable pigment. The paint's iron-rich formula protected wooden facades against the harsh Nordic climate.
Swedes have such a deep cultural affection for their idyllic red cottages that they frequently replicate the design for birdhouses, duck houses, mailboxes, and garden decorations. It’s a whimsical way to add a touch of classic Scandinavian design to the natural landscape!
Skuleskogens nationalpark looks like a quick stop where I can stretch my legs. Let's check it out. Just 2km up this dirt road.
Lots of dirt roads once you leave the E4 highway.
I've got some extra time (it's only 4:30pm) so I took a ride around Alnön island before heading into Sundsvall.
Basement Apartment by M was a really nice place operated by an excellent B&B host. The bed was super comfortable. The kitchen was stocked. There were nice touches like fruit and snacks and coffee and creamer. Just great.
At the end of this day, I'm feeling a little wistful. I only have one day of riding left before I settle into Stockholm for a few days and then fly home.
Kathi has committed to fostering another Husky. He comes today after I go to sleep (10hr time difference). When I get home, I'm going to have another dog!
